King’s College NHS Foundation Trust has a large Therapy department with 300 + staff from Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy and Speech and Language Therapy. Each service is organised under a Head of Profession with a Chief of Therapies heading up the service and representing Therapies across the Trust. The department has well-established traditions of supporting learning and development, which ensures all staff are given opportunities to develop skills and knowledge to reach their full potential. King’s offers an excellent learning environment with easy access to the Medical School library and other training facilities.

Working as a band 6 occupational therapist at Kings College Hospital offers excellent opportunities for developing clinical, managerial and educational skills. We are looking for motivated and enthusiastic OT’s to join the current therapists in post.

An opportunity has arisen for an OT to join the rotation on a fixed term contract (end date 27/09/19).

The rotations cover:

  • Acute Medicine
  • Specialist Medicine (Renal, Haem-Oncology)
  • Orthopaedics
  • Amputees & Surgery (a split post working between Denmark Hill and Bowley Close)
  • Southwark Rehab and Reablement Team (Community based rotation)

The King’s medical rotation provides OT’s with the opportunity to develop and consolidate many skills, for example:

  • Acute assessment skills and the ability to interface with local community services i.e. Admission Avoidance Teams
  • Assessment and rehabilitation skills for patients transferred off critical care
  • Specialist assessment and rehabilitation skills using COPM in haematological-oncology, where we also provide fatigue and lifestyle management advice and promote/lead on relaxation sessions
  • Prosthetic upper and lower limb rehabilitation at Bowley Close

There is an established system for the delivery of clinical governance objectives, CPD and Evidence Based Practice across the department. CPD is encouraged through the Trust appraisal system, as well as through Team CPD Cycles. We encourage journal clubs, formal teaching, skills training and service development, with opportunities to lead and participate in these sessions.

This post has access to funds to attend external training with up to 10 x days study leave available pro rata, as well as access to a comprehensive library and computer facilities on site. Band 6 OTs have regular cross department meetings as part of peer support and networking. There is also opportunity to develop your skills in clinical audit and supervision. Students are regularly on placement from local universities, and as a band 6 OT, this is a fantastic learning opportunity. If you are not yet a Practice Placement Educator, you can be supported in attending appropriate training.

You must have a degree or equivalent in Occupational Therapy and be HCPC registered. Experience of consistently treating patients with complex physical needs will be essential to this post. The post holder requires a flexible approach to working, including cross sites and be able to undertake weekend working commitments as part of seven day working rotas.
